Monday, June 19
Throughout the months of June and July, our daily devotions will be invitations to pray, perhaps in familiar ways and sometimes in new ways. This week we invite you to pray using the words and prayers of scripture itself, the psalms.
Sometimes we struggle as we try to pray, believing that we have to come up with the perfect words or express the desires of our hearts in phrases no one, including God, has ever heard before. Yet, scripture provides us with words to pray; words that have been used for generations: the psalms. It is quite likely that as a child even Jesus learned to pray with the words of the psalms. To begin this week, we invite you to a prayer of praise with Psalm 145:1-9:
1 I will extol you, my God and King,
and bless your name forever and ever.
2 Every day I will bless you
and praise your name forever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord and greatly to be praised;
his greatness is unsearchable.
4 One generation shall extol your works to another
and shall declare your mighty acts.
5 They will recount the glorious[a] splendor of your majesty,
and on your wondrous works I will meditate.
6 They will proclaim the might of your awesome deeds,
and I will declare your greatness.
7 They shall celebrate the fame of your abundant goodness
and shall sing aloud of your righteousness.
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful,
slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love.
9 The Lord is good to all,
and his compassion is over all that he has made.
Amen.
