1 As he walked along, he saw a man blind from birth. 2 His disciples asked him, “Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?” 3 Jesus answered, “Neither this man nor his parents sinned; he was born blind so that God’s works might be revealed in him. 4 We must work the works of him who sent me while it is day; night is coming, when no one can work. 5 As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.”
Prayer Focus: Our hymn for this week is “Be Thou My Vision” and our daily devotions follow verses from John 9 and Exodus 13. Beginning with the story of Jesus healing a man blind from birth, we first hear the disciples ask Jesus whose fault it is that the man was born blind. The disciples assume that it was not the man’s fault, so propose that the parents had sinned. So, as a result of their sin, their son could not see. Jesus reminds the disciples that is not how blindness works and redirects them to what they might do in the midst of suffering. Jesus is the light of the world and with him we can work to end suffering. Pray that you might see clearly so that you might act on someone’s behalf today.
