Music: The Lord’s Prayer – based on music by Albert Hay Malotte, performed by Ellen Klodová, violin
Prayer Focus: It was St. Augustine, the fifth-century bishop of North Africa, who said “those who sing, pray twice.” Our hymns and songs are prayers to God, and singing them adds breadth to our words. Throughout the history of the church, prayers have been set to music. This week we’ll look at musical settings of well-known prayers by our ancestors in faith. We’ll start today with an instrumental arrangement of Albert Hay Malotte’s famous setting of “The Lord’s Prayer.” It has been said that the first three repeated notes are some of the most recognizable in the church music canon. As you listen, do you “hear” the words? In what ways is the melody altered, bringing new emphasis to a particular phrase? Let the music be a prayer of the heart.
Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.
