Monday, January 3: Scripture – Luke 3:21-22a
21 Now when all the people were baptized, and when Jesus also had been baptized and was praying, the heaven was opened,
22 and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove.
Prayer Focus: This coming Sunday is known in the church liturgical year as “Baptism of the Lord Sunday.” At Unity Presbyterian Church it is the Sunday on which we will ordain and install our new class of ruling elders and deacons. Today and tomorrow we hear the Gospel of Luke’s account of Jesus’ baptism. It is really quite brief – as if Jesus just joins in a large group of people being baptized. Jesus was praying when Heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended upon him. Everyone can see the barrier between God and the creation open for just a minute and the Holy Spirit descending with a bodily form of a dove. Pray that you might see the heavens open today. Pray that you might feel the Spirit descend upon you.
