1 On the third day there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there. 2 Jesus and his disciples had also been invited to the wedding. 3 When the wine gave out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.”
Prayer focus: Curiously, John’s gospel provides us with very few details about this wedding. We are not told who’s wedding this is, nor why Jesus and his disciples attend. A greater story is unfolding, and John doesn’t want us to get bogged down in insignificant details. John unceremoniously informs us that the wine has run out. His phrasing suggests that this outcome was only a matter of time and was as inevitable as the setting of the sun or the movement of the tide. Instinctively and immediately, Mary informs Jesus of this scarcity. All of us have faced moments in our lives where it feels as though the wine has run out. Moments when we feel empty, defeated, or hopeless. Although we may have known the outcome was inevitable, our pain is no less real. Let us pray today that in our moments of scarcity, we, like Mary, might instinctively and immediately bring our concerns to Christ.
