Monday, February 7: Scripture – Psalm 1:1-3
1 Happy are those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or take the path that sinners tread, or sit in the seat of scoffers;
2 but their delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law they meditate day and night.
3 They are like trees planted by streams of water, which yield their fruit in its season, and their leaves do not wither. In all that they do, they prosper.
Prayer Focus: When we think of the law, we often view it as a deterrent to bad behavior or a tool to punish those who step out of line. But Presbyterians, beginning with John Calvin, see an additional use of the law: it is a guide for fruitful living. That is the idea expressed in these opening verses of Psalm 1. Those who delight in the law of the Lord are like trees planted by streams of water. Written by one who knew the dry and desert conditions of the Middle East, a tree planted by a stream of water was an image of true flourishing. Pray that you might live into the commands of God today, not out of fear but with a desire to flourish!
