Monday, February 6: Scripture – Matthew 5:33-36
33 “Again, you have heard that it was said to those of ancient times, ‘You shall not swear falsely, but carry out the vows you have made to the Lord.’
34 But I say to you: Do not swear at all, either by heaven, for it is the throne of God,
35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool, or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the great King.
36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make one hair white or black.
Prayer Focus: As Jesus interprets the law or the Torah in the Sermon on the Mount, we find a long series of “You have heard that it was said … But I say to you …” Sometimes Jesus seems to find loopholes in the law. Other times, as in our verses for today, he seems to be more strict. You have heard it said that you should carry out your vows; but I say to you, do not swear oaths at all! Pray that you might hear the voice of Christ to you today. Pray that you might obey the Word of the Lord, recognizing that obedience requires interpretation.
