Monday, August 29: Scripture – Luke 14:25-26
25 Now large crowds were traveling with him, and he turned and said to them,
26 “Whoever comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters, yes, and even life itself, cannot be my disciple.
Prayer Focus: We continue in Luke 14 and find that after dinner at the home of one of the Pharisees, Jesus continues traveling and teaching. But this particular teaching makes us say, “what?” Whoever comes to Jesus and does not hate family, even life itself, cannot be a disciple. We understand there is a priority of loves and that Jesus must be at the top of the list. And yet, to “hate” our family, and even life itself, seems to be a bit extreme. It is idolatry to put anything above God in our worship and love. But does that really mean we must turn our back on all the other relationships that matter? Is it even possible to completely make this choice? Pray on this difficult text today and hug your family close.
