1 Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God; for many false prophets have gone out into the world.

Prayer Focus: This week we begin a new series of devotions and preaching on Unity’s Annual Vision of Ministry for the 2025-2026 church program year: “We Love.” Love seems to be so elemental to being a Christian, that I wonder if we just gloss over it. But love, especially as we find it in scripture, has a depth that transforms our lives and the world. This week we begin to reflect on God’s love and our response of love with 1 John 4. In ways that we have forgotten, the ancient world recognized that there were many spirits at work in the world. There are spirits working against God’s plans and purposes. False prophets try to draw us away from Christ. The context of 1 John is that the church has experienced a split and there is danger that more believers will be drawn away from the truth. So they must discern and test the spirits to see whether they are from God. Pray for the gift of wisdom and discernment to test the spirits that call and move you today.
