11 The Lord swore to David a sure oath
from which he will not turn back:
“One of the sons of your body
I will set on your throne.
12 If your sons keep my covenant
and my decrees that I shall teach them,
their sons also, forevermore,
shall sit on your throne.”
Prayer Focus: The promise of the Lord is that, if they keep the covenant, a descendant of David will forevermore sit on the throne. That is a huge promise. Our system of government depends on limited terms, regular elections, and swings from one party to another. So, what is it that lasts in our common life together? As we continue this journey to the cross and the empty tomb, look for what is lasting. Pray that you might keep the Lord’s covenant and in a small way enrich and continue the lasting promises of God.
“History is important, for without it we are at the mercy of whims. Memory is a databank we use to evaluate our position and make decisions. With a biblical memory we have two thousand years of experience from which to make the off-the-cuff responses that are required each day in the life of faith. If we are going to live adequately and maturely as the people of God, we need more data to work from than our own experience can give us.” Peterson, 160.
