Monday, April 25: Scripture – John 21:1-3
1 After these things Jesus showed himself again to the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias; and he showed himself in this way.
2 Gathered there together were Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael of Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee, and two others of his disciples.
3 Simon Peter said to them, “I am going fishing.” They said to him, “We will go with you.” They went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.
Prayer Focus: In these weeks of the Easter season we are following various texts suggested by the lectionary – a three year cycle of scriptural texts for preaching and teaching. And the texts jump around a bit. Last week we were with the apostles in Jerusalem. This week, we find ourselves back in Galilee with some of the disciples by the Sea of Tiberias. Peter, who had been a fisherman before Jesus called him, decides that he’s going fishing. The other disciples with him decide they will go fishing too. Have you ever just needed to get away, return to something familiar, and get your bearings? I think that’s what is going on here with Peter. Jesus has been resurrected from the dead and Peter needs to go fishing. I pray that you might find that place to recalibrate this week. Pray that you might go fishing (whatever that means for you).
