Monday, April 18: Scripture – Acts 5:17-18
17 Then the high priest took action; he and all who were with him (that is, the sect of the Sadducees), being filled with jealousy,
18 arrested the apostles and put them in the public prison.
Prayer Focus: This week after Easter, we join a story from the Acts of the Apostles. The initial post-resurrection, post-ascension, and post-Pentecost days of the apostles are spent in Jerusalem teaching and preaching around the temple. As you can imagine, preaching and teaching about how Jesus had been crucified by the religious leaders and then resurrected from the dead was not popular with those authorities. So, the high priest and other leaders, filled with jealousy because the people were flocking to hear the apostles’ preaching, arrested them and put them in prison. Easter is a day of celebration and joy, and yet those who believe this good news find themselves at odds with a world focused on death and control. As you continue to celebrate resurrection today, pray that you might also appreciate the true risk that it is to believe this world-altering good news.
