Scripture – Exodus 32:9-10
9 The Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, how stiff-necked they are.
10 Now let me alone so that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, and of you I will make a great nation.”
Prayer Focus: While a few weeks ago we saw the Lord’s patience when dealing with the people’s complaining, their acts to create and then worship the golden calf are a step too far. It seems that the Lord wants Moses to go down the mountain so that the Lord’s wrath may burn hot and consume the people. God is willing to start again and make a great nation from Moses. In these verses we see why the people of Israel regard this story as the primary way to understand “sin.” Sin is not pride like we typically think from Genesis 3. Sin is forgetting the God who delivers and instead worshiping something else. Sin is idolatry. What do you think makes God most angry today? Do you see connections between that anger and this story of forgetfulness and idolatry?
