Friday, October 29: Hymn – Our God our Help in Ages Past
Prayer Focus: In yesterday’s devotion I mentioned Isaac Watts. Watts was one of the first hymn composers to introduce new poetry or original songs to the English church. Even when he based his hymns off a Psalm (for example our hymn today is based on Psalm 90), he introduced new phrasing or paraphrases of scripture. Watts’ hymns became very popular, especially among non-conformists or non-Anglicans in England and in the American colonies. His hymns, including “Our God, our Help in Ages Past,” remain favorites for many today. As you listen to this simple version of the hymn today, pray for those who write hymns and spiritual songs. Pray that they might help us all hear and sing the good news of the gospel in words that move us to greater faithfulness today.
Remember – for the first time since the pandemic began, we will have significant congregational singing on Sunday. To do so as safely as possible, masks will be required this week.
