Friday, March 24: Scripture – Matthew 14:28-30
28 Peter answered him, “Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water.”
29 He said, “Come.” So Peter got out of the boat, started walking on the water, and came toward Jesus.
30 But when he noticed the strong wind, he became frightened, and, beginning to sink, he cried out, “Lord, save me!”
Prayer Focus: Instead of not being afraid, Peter decides he needs to test whether or not Jesus is real. His request stems from his fear and the language he uses indicates doubt. It is the same verbs and phrasing that Satan uses during the temptations in the wilderness, “If you are the Messiah, then …” So Peter is testing Jesus, “If you are real, command me to come to you on the water.” Surprisingly, Jesus tells him to come. Peter starts to walk on the water until his fear takes over and he sinks. So, he cries out again, “Lord, save me!” Pray that you will not feel the need to test the Lord today. Pray that you will trust when Jesus tells you not to be afraid, for he comes in the moment you need him.
