Friday, March 11: Scripture – 1 John 2:15-17
15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. The love of the Father is not in those who love the world;
16 for all that is in the world—the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches—comes not from the Father but from the world.
17 And the world and its desire are passing away, but those who do the will of God live forever.
Prayer Focus: As we have already seen, in the Gospel and the letters of John there are clear distinctions between the ways of God and the ways working against God. Often the language used is light and darkness. Here we find an additional contrast between the world and the love of the Father. The world, the cosmos, is not the natural world or creation. John uses it as a way to talk about all those things that are working against God’s plans and purposes. Thus, all that is in the world is defined as the desire of the flesh, the desire of the eyes, the pride in riches. All these things come to an end, but those who do the will of God will have eternal life. Pray that you might turn your eyes from the desires of the world to the eternal life offered to you in the love of the Father today. This is putting love into truth and action.
