13 He went up the mountain and called to him those whom he wanted, and they came to him. 14 And he appointed twelve to be with him and to be sent out to preach 15 and to have authority to cast out demons. 16 So he appointed the twelve: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter), 17 James son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder), 18 and Andrew, and Philip, and Bartholomew, and Matthew, and Thomas, and James son of Alphaeus, and Thaddaeus, and Simon the Cananaean, 19 and Judas Iscariot, who handed him over.
Prayer Focus: Jesus appoints twelve to be with him, to be sent to preach, and to have authority to cast out demons. I don’t know about you, but being with Jesus sounds good to me. I also appreciate good preaching and teaching, so that’s essential. But authority to cast out demons? This is the full picture of Jesus’ ministry so far in the gospel, so the disciples are appointed to represent the fullness of who Jesus is and what Jesus does. Are you ready to be like Jesus today? Pray that you will be ready for when the moment comes, because Jesus has appointed you to be with him, to share good news, and to confront the powers that oppose God’s reign.
