Friday, August 25: Scripture – Matthew 18:18-19
18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not prevail against it.
19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven, and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.
Prayer Focus: In response to his declaration of faith, Jesus gives Simon a new name. The Rock. Peter. And on this rock Jesus says he will build his church. Peter even gets keys to the kingdom of heaven, for the purpose of binding and loosing in both heaven and earth. Lots to unpack in these two verses and we’ll spend more time with it on Sunday. Is Jesus building the church on Peter himself or on the declaration of faith that Peter just made (the declaration that is a gift from God?) What does it mean to have the keys? Is what is bound and loosed illustrative of what is already true or descriptive of what Peter and the church will enact? Pray that you might not get lost in the rabbit holes of these verses today. Pray that you might instead focus on who or what is the foundation of your church. Where and what is your church building today?
