Luke 1:26-29—Mary
“Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be.” Luke 1:29
How many times have we felt like Mary – confused and troubled by how we are being greeted by the Holy Spirit? This year, especially, it has been befuddling at times, discerning God’s voice through all the noise: whether we are a parent making decisions about school for our children, an employer deciding best practices for your employees, or even a congregation deciding how best to worship together. We tend to wish the Holy Spirit would come right out and speak to us and tell us exactly what to do – and I believe – so often God is, yet with all the noise in our lives we are confused about the greetings and angels He is sending us.
A song, entitled “Angels Among Us” from the band, Alabama, reminds us:
When life held troubled times, and had me down on my knees
There’s always been someone to come along and comfort me
A kind word from a stranger, to lend a helping hand
A phone call from a friend, just to say I understand.
Now ain’t it kind of funny at the dark end of the road
Someone lights the way with just a single ray of hope.
Oh, I believe there are Angels Among Us,
Sent down to us from somewhere up above.
They come to you and me in our darkest hours
To show us how to live, to teach us how to give,
To guide us with a light of love.
They wear so many faces, show up in the strangest places
And grace us with their mercies in our time of need.
God is always speaking to us. During this Advent season we must simply believe in His almighty power and all He is capable of doing in our lives, believe in the daily blessings, and be open to the angels He is sending to us, now, and throughout the year.
Prayer: Dear God: We long to hear your voice in the midst of this busy season. Help us to find the angels you send to us to guide our way. Thank you for your everlasting grace and compassion. Help us to be open to all the blessings you are bestowing on us. Amen.
