“Away in a manager, no crib for a bed, the little Lord Jesus laid down his sweet head…”
I sang this hymn as a lullaby to our newborn Savannah as she was born days before her first Christmas. The soft, simple tune and slow meter calmed us both in such a beautifully chaotic season.
We can easily get swept away buying all the presents, planning meals, and sending out cards and before you know it, the day has happened around us rather than within us. The story of the stars shining down upon Jesus’ simple bed and surrounding animals is a stark contrast to the hustle and bustle of the modern-day Christmas season. Away in a Manger reminds us that Christmas is about slowing down to celebrate the Christ Child; the most precious gift of all.
Prayer: Heavenly Father, thank you for the gift of the little Lord Jesus that first Christmas day. As we celebrate, help us to slow down to enjoy this season and the hope, peace, joy, and love that Jesus brought to us from you. Amen.
