December 10, 2024: Hark! The Herald Angels Sing (GTG #119)

“Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled! Joyful, all ye nations rise; join the triumph of the skies;”

I love this hymn because it captures the essence of Christmas. Growing up, I found immense joy in the anticipation of all the things that come with the season: decorating the tree, watching movies, listening to music, and attending the Christmas Eve service. “Joyful, all ye nations rise” calls us to celebrate these things with profound joy and excitement, not holding back on any feelings of happiness and bliss. “God and sinners reconciled!” highlights the significance of Christ on earth. Christ is the reconciliation between God and humankind, and during this holiday, we celebrate the birth of our great Savior. This hymn is such a good depiction of Christmas joy.

As we reflect on these words, let’s embrace the peace and mercy Christ offers. Let us sing and celebrate with one another on the arrival of Christ. This season, may we share the good news of reconciliation and extend Christ’s love to one another.

Prayer: Heavenly father, thank you for your ultimate gift to humanity, your son Jesus. As we reflect on the good news that has been brought, let us also embrace the mercy and peace you have given. I pray we celebrate with joy and triumph over the birth of your son. And let us share that joy with all nations, allowing all of your people to proclaim this great news. Amen.
