10 Then Esther spoke to Hathach and gave him a message for Mordecai: 11 “All the king’s servants and the people of the king’s provinces know that, if any man or woman goes to the king inside the inner court without being called, there is but one law: to be put to death. Only if the king holds out the golden scepter to someone may that person live. I myself have not been called to come in to the king for thirty days.”
Prayer Focus: This coming Sunday, the revised common lectionary suggests a text from the book of Esther, chapter 7. We will consider that text in later devotions this week and in the sermon on Sunday, but to help understand what happens there, let’s begin this week with the fourth chapter of Esther. The Persian king, Ahasuerus, was a fickle and unpredictable man, who deposed the previous queen before selecting Esther as his new queen. Now, Esther’s uncle Mordecai has brought word of a plot against the Jewish people and asked Esther to intervene with the king. Esther sends word that doing so is a great risk. Have you ever been asked to do something that brought great risk to you or your family? As you pray, recognize the risks that many take for their faith in Jesus Christ. Pray for boldness and pray for safety.
