31 Then he began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering and be rejected by the elders, the chief priests, and the scribes and be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He said all this quite openly. And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! For you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”
Prayer Focus: In yesterday’s verses, Peter declares that Jesus is the Messiah and then Jesus ordered them not to tell anyone about him. He immediately began to teach them that the Son of Man must undergo great suffering, be killed, and after three days rise again. Peter hears this and begins to “rebuke” Jesus. The only ones who have been “rebuked” so far in the Gospel of Mark are demons and unclean spirits. So, it seems that Peter believes Jesus is possessed when he starts talking about being killed and rising from the dead. Jesus responds by “rebuking” Peter for allowing concerns of the world to overshadow the plan of God. Let’s not start rebuking others – nothing good comes when we start doing that. Pray that your mind might instead be on divine things.
