5 And the whole Judean region and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him and were baptized by him in the River Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, “The one who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water, but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Prayer Focus: John the baptizer’s proclamation is not just spiritual or religious, it is political. The whole Judean region and all the people of Jerusalem are coming to John to confess their sins. Confession of sins and absolution should happen in the temple in Jerusalem, not in the wilderness with some strange looking prophet. Power is shifting, and John points beyond himself to the world’s true power – the one to come who baptizes with the Holy Spirit. Pray that you might be filled with the power of the Spirit and not settle for temporary earthly power.
