Monday, October 2: Scripture – Ruth 2:8-9
8 Then Boaz said to Ruth, “Now listen, my daughter, do not go to glean in another field or leave this one, but keep close to my young women.
9 Keep your eyes on the field that is being reaped and follow behind them. I have ordered the young men not to bother you. If you get thirsty, go to the vessels and drink from what the young men have drawn.”
Prayer Focus: The second focus for Unity’s Annual Vision, “God’s story and Our Stories” is “Listening with empathy and curiosity to the varied stories that shape the lives of others in our congregation and community.” We will encounter two scriptural stories where listening with empathy and curiosity bright unexpected voices to light. We begin with Boaz and Ruth. Ruth is a foreigner who came to Bethlehem with her mother-in-law, Naomi, after the death of both of their husbands. Recognizing they need something to eat, Naomi sends Ruth to glean in the field of a relative named Boaz. She works diligently and faithfully, being noticed by Boaz. Boaz speaks words of compassion and care to Ruth, ensuring that she is welcome, protected, and will have food and water. Pray that you might notice those who find themselves in need of your care today. Pray for the ability to stop and listen.
