Saturday, September 2: Scripture – Romans 12:19-20
19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”
20 Instead, “if your enemies are hungry, feed them; if they are thirsty, give them something to drink, for by doing this you will heap burning coals on their heads.”
Prayer Focus: By feeding our enemies and giving them something to drink we might heap burning coals on their heads. Sometimes we think this is their just dessert – they treat us badly, but we treat them well and they suffer as a result. However, I read another interpretation which suggested that if your fire had gone out, the easiest and best way to restart it was to ask a neighbor to share some of their coals with you. You would carry the coals in a basket on your head and place them in your hearth to relight your fire. Perhaps our good deeds will reignite the fire of the spirit, of faith, hope, and love in our neighbors. Pray that we might all know the light of Christ and that we might have the courage to share the coals we carry with those in darkness.
