Wednesday, July 19: Listen
“Know this, my dear brothers and sisters: everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak, and slow to grow angry.” -James 1:19
Consider: Remember the story of Mary and Martha in Luke 10. Martha hurried around the house getting everything ready for dinner, while Mary sat at the feet of Jesus and listened. Both are good and holy endeavors. This week, (and every week), there will be plenty to DO. What we need practice with is the listening part. We usually only listen to respond…what would the world be like if we listened to understand?
Reflect: What is the difference between hearing and listening? Whose stories do we listen to and whose do we ignore? Is it challenging to be quiet? What are you listening for this week?
Pray: God of all voices, help me to be quick to listen and slow to speak. And as I try to do these things, help me understand. Amen.
