Sunday, May 7: Scripture – John 14:12-14
12 Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father.
13 I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
14 If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.
Prayer Focus: Taking these verses out of context, we find ourselves with a kind of vending machine theology. Whatever you want, just put in your money and hit the right button, and Jesus will give it to you. That does not seem to be what Jesus is promising in a text that begins with troubled hearts. Jesus reminds the disciples that the Father will be glorified in the Son. The greater works that we might do are designed to bring glory to the Father. As our wills and desires become more and more closely aligned with Jesus, the more God is glorified and we begin to ask for what God desires when we pray. Pray that God might be glorified in the public professions of faith by our Confirmation Students today. Thanks be to God for the gift of Jesus.
