Monday, January 2: Scripture – Matthew 2:1-2
1 In the time of King Herod, after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea, magi from the east came to Jerusalem,
2 asking, “Where is the child who has been born king of the Jews? For we observed his star in the east and have come to pay him homage.”
Prayer Focus: The Gospel of Matthew begins with a genealogy that connects Jesus with King David and with Abraham and then it reports Jesus’ birth quite simply. No angels or shepherds, just an early dream by Joseph about taking Mary as his wife. So we immediately recognize the potential for conflict when chapter 2 begins, “In the time of King Herod.” This is heightened by magi from the east asking about a child who has been born king of the Jews. While many would suggest that we need to separate our faith from our politics, scripture does not let us off so easily. Pray for the wisdom to navigate the politics of earthly kingdoms as we seek to pay homage to the heavenly king.
