Thursday, November 3 – Hymn: Come Sing to God
Prayer Focus: The hymn “Come Sing to God” was a new hymn to me when we sang it as part of the All Saints service last year. The text was written in the 1980s by Fred Anderson, but the words are set to a familiar tune. You might know the tune Ellacombe from the Isaac Watts classic, “I Sing the Mighty Power of God” or the Palm Sunday favorite, “Hosanna, Loud Hosanna.” It is a good reminder of the ways that music speaks across the generations and the ages. A familiar tune is repurposed with new words to speak a new word from the Lord. As you hear this hymn today, led by organ, choir, and congregation, give thanks that the Lord continues to speak to us today. Give thanks for new words and old tunes. Give thanks for new traditions in music and song.
