Thursday, September 22: Scripture – Luke 16:24-26
24 He called out, ‘Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus to dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue, for I am in agony in these flames.’
25 But Abraham said, ‘Child, remember that during your lifetime you received your good things and Lazarus in like manner evil things, but now he is comforted here, and you are in agony.
26 Besides all this, between you and us a great chasm has been fixed, so that those who might want to pass from here to you cannot do so, and no one can cross from there to us.’
Prayer Focus: As this is a parable, it is not wise to read too much into this vision of the afterlife. Some will try to say this is Jesus’ vision of heaven and hell and a great chasm between them which cannot be crossed. But the parable seems to use that chasm merely to illustrate that the time for aid for both the rich man and Lazarus is now over. The rich man cannot command Lazarus to do anything for him now. Lazarus cannot choose to act with mercy now. The time for both to be agents of aid has ended. Pray that you might know the urgency of acting today. Do not put off an opportunity to care for someone else. Care for them today!
