Wednesday, September 14: Scripture – Luke 16:5-7
5 So, summoning his master’s debtors one by one, he asked the first, ‘How much do you owe my master?’
6 He answered, ‘A hundred jugs of olive oil.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill, sit down quickly, and make it fifty.’
7 Then he asked another, ‘And how much do you owe?’ He replied, ‘A hundred containers of wheat.’ He said to him, ‘Take your bill and make it eighty.’
Prayer Focus: In this parable it is difficult to understand whose actions we should be following. Usually, the characters in a parable reveal something about the characteristics of God and how we can mirror God’s love in our own lives. This parable leaves us confused, wondering if the rich man or the manager is the one acting righteously. Perhaps that is not the question that is most helpful to ask. Perhaps, instead, we might ask ourselves what positions of power do we sit in that might allow us to help lift the burden off of those with less power? Let us pray this week that we might recognize opportunities to help support and love our neighbors who are carrying unjust burdens.
