WEEKDAY GROUPS

Unity offers Bible studies or small groups just about every day of the week and at varied times. The groups and classes listed below are open to new participants at this time.

Year-long Studies

MONDAY MUSINGS WITH MATT

Meets: Mondays from 9:30-10:30 a.m. all year long
Study: Discussion of Sunday sermon
Where: Hospitality Room (M201)
Facilitator: Matt Rich

Have you ever had a question Sunday afternoon about the morning’s sermon? Felt like you wanted to dig a little deeper into the scripture? Maybe even thought the preacher missed the main point all together? The best sermons should be the beginning of a conversation about the gospel, so Dr. Rich wants to give you a chance to “talk back” each week. Come just once or every week with your questions, your thoughts, and a cup of coffee for conversation about and study of Sunday’s sermon and scripture texts.

THE COLOR OF COMPROMISE
Sponsored by Providence Presbytery

Meets: Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. or 6:30 p.m.

Have you ever wondered what role the church played in our country’s racial history?  How was the church teaching love while also justifying slavery?  Can you imagine sermons being preached about justice on Sunday mornings, and then the congregation attending lynchings in the afternoon?  The book The Color of Compromise, by Jemar Tisby, lays out how the church responded in its actions and in its inaction throughout our nation’s racial history.  It is equal parts challenging and hopeful.  It names the ways in which people of faith have been complicit in systemic racism, but then also names the ways in which the church has and can continue to work towards racial justice.  You are invited to read and share conversation with members of Providence Presbytery this fall.  Sue Smith and Rev. Molly Spangler will lead groups in conversation.  Please see the details of when each group meets below and sign up to participate by Sunday, September 6.  After you register, please purchase the book from your favorite local bookstore.  If you have any questions, please reach out to Molly at mspangler@unityfortmill.org

COME TO THE TABLE

Meets: Sundays from 4:30-5:30 p.m.
Study: A Six-Week Small Group on The Lord’s Supper
Where: Room M210
When: 6 weeks beginning September 20
Facilitator: Dr. Matt Rich

Betty Crowell once wrote, “communion is a meal of many meanings.” At Unity Presbyterian Church, as we gather at the Lord’s Table, we are often reminded that Christ has promised to meet us as we celebrate the joyful feast of the people of God. While communion is best experienced rather than completely understood, we still might wonder with questions like “Who can participate in communion?”, “Why and how often do we celebrate communion?”, and “What exactly happens with this bread and the juice?” If you would like to explore more about the history, theology, and practice of The Lord’s Supper in hopes of deepening your own faith and encounters with Christ in this sacrament, join Dr. Matt for Come to the Table: a six-week small group seriesEveryone is invited to join in this time of conversation and study because there will always be a place at the Lord’s Table for you.

Week 1 – Invitation
Week 2 – Why Do We Have to Do This?
Week 3 – The Joyful Feast or a Funeral for Jesus?
Week 4 – Remembrance and Hope
