Friday, August 19: Scripture – Mark 6:37-38

37 But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?”

38 And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? Go and see.” When they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”

Prayer Focus: Jesus’ response to the disciples’ compassion is again surprising: “You give them something to eat.” They thought they were being kind, but Jesus turned it back on them. Their response continues to be practical: “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them?” The food to feed all these people is in the village, not in the wilderness. It’s going to cost a small fortune to buy all that bread. The logistics seem insurmountable, but Jesus has another plan. Jesus isn’t concerned about the food in the village. He asks, “How many loaves are here in the wilderness.” They ask around and find five, plus two fish. Pray that you might take the practical steps to feed someone, but also be open to the possibility that God has something even bigger planned. Remember the new thing …
