Monday, November 15: Scripture – John 18:28
28 Then they took Jesus from Caiaphas to Pilate’s headquarters. It was early in the morning. They themselves did not enter the headquarters, so as to avoid ritual defilement and to be able to eat the Passover.
Prayer Focus: This coming Sunday is known in the church year as “Christ the King’ Sunday. It is the final Sunday before the season of Advent and the lectionary often brings us texts that seem out of place. After all, next week is Thanksgiving and then it is Christmas, so why are we looking at a text from the last night of Jesus’ earthly life? Christ the King Sunday reminds us that Christ is truly the Lord of all creation, and it is this God of all who will be born as a child in Bethlehem. Just as it is the case today, during Jesus’ life those who threatened the established power structure were viewed as a threat. So before we reach the familiar Christmas story, we need to reckon with the threat that Jesus brings. Our text this week helps us to do just that. Pray that you will enter Pilate’s headquarters this week, do not be afraid to enter into the mud and the muck of political life, and pray that you might see how the gospel peels back the layers to reveal the true heart of things.
