8 Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; 9 for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. 10 Then the disciples returned to their homes.
Prayer Focus: The other disciple also goes into the tomb. “He saw and believed.” It is not clear what he believed, “for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead.” It seems to me that he believed the body was gone. Perhaps he believed Mary’s words that someone had taken the body. But there is still no rejoicing for these two disciples. What they have seen so far has not led to belief in the resurrection. But they are on the way. Today is Maundy Thursday, the night we celebrate Jesus’ final supper with his disciples. The disciples at that table did not understand, but they were on the way. Pray for all those who may not understand, and yet are on the way.
