5 I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6 Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
Prayer Focus: It’s a hard thing for us as 21st century American Christians to hear that “apart from Christ you can do nothing.” We would like to think that we can do most good things on our own. Sure, Christ might give us a helping hand from time to time, but really we are achieving the growth and the bearing fruit, right? I think that’s probably the sin of pride that has been ingrained so deeply in us. Perhaps that’s the part that needs to be pruned from you and from me today? As we abide in pride, we bear no fruit and wither. As we abide in Christ, we grow and flourish. Pray that you might abide in Christ and bear much fruit today.
