Saturday, January 30: Scripture – Mark 1:29-31

29 As soon as they left the synagogue, they entered the house of Simon and Andrew, with James and John. 30 Now Simon’s mother-in-law was in bed with a fever, and they told him about her at once. 31 He came and took her by the hand and lifted her up. Then the fever left her, and she began to serve them.

Prayer Focus: In this first chapter of Mark’s Gospel, Jesus continues his ministry of healing. After leaving the synagogue they enter the house of Simon and Andrew. But Simon’s mother-in-law is sick in bed with a fever. Jesus came, took her by the hand and lifted her up. He restored her to life and health. Her response is to begin to serve them. This isn’t a slight on Simon’s mother-in-law, as if her only worth was in being a servant. It is a recognition that service is an essential response to being transformed by an encounter with Jesus. It is an expression of gratitude. How are you expressing your gratitude to God today? Who are you serving?
