Wednesday, January 20: Scripture – Jonah 3:3-4
3 So Jonah set out and went to Nineveh, according to the word of the Lord. Now Nineveh was an exceedingly large city, a three days’ walk across. 4 Jonah began to go into the city, going a day’s walk. And he cried out, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!”
Prayer Focus: The text reinforces the size of Nineveh – it was a three days’ walk across. It’s hard to know for sure, but it appears that Jonah is trying to do the absolute minimum he can to appease the Lord. Jonah goes into the city about a third of the way and cries out once, “Forty days more, and Nineveh shall be overthrown!” Technically, this is what the Lord asked him to do – go to Nineveh and proclaim to it the message. But it is clear that Jonah’s heart is not in it. Pray that you might not seek just the minimum that the Lord requires of you. Pray that you might truly embrace the Lord’s call!
