Matthew 2:10-11—Magi

“When they saw the star, they were overjoyed. On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented their gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.”
Matthew 2:10-11, NIV

After leaving Herod in Jerusalem, the Wise Men are overjoyed that the star still leads them on to the child King. After months of study, preparation, travel and all that entails, they have arrived, dusty, tired strangers. They see the child with his momma. Their quest has been successful!!! Finally, full of unbelievable joy, they bow down in humility and worship this new King. Worship.
Adoration. Praise. Honor. Explanations, I’m sure. Excitement. And JOY! And as very good guests, they bring gifts. Special gifts fit for this long awaited Promised One, the new King that they had read about in old writings of Hebrew prophets. Gold for
royalty; incense for the priestly position, and myrrh for his
departure to another life. Expensive, costly gifts. Overwhelming.

GOD provides everything we need in this life and for eternity: direction, guidance, joy, work to do, tools and talents, and
company for the journey even though we don’t always recognize their value at the time.

Prayer: Magnanimous God, thank you, truly, for your costly gift to us. Be in and with us all as we travel into 2021. Amen.
