Luke 2:17-20—Shepherds and Angels
“But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” Luke 2:19
Mary must have been filled with unimaginable joy. To have been chosen, to become the mother of Jesus. All that she didn’t know, yet she chose to receive it in faith. With this Good News came many things. Some things were immediately good, some became good in time. The gift of life within her. She kept these treasures to herself. She pondered them in her heart.
A woman’s heart is a special place. It’s a place where joy lives, where the dreams of tomorrow live. For me, many things stay close to my heart. The blessing of becoming a mother was one of the most precious gifts that God has given me. The gift of
motherhood to Mary was a gift to all of mankind.
Ponder is rarely a word I use. To ponder means to think about something carefully, especially before making a decision or reaching a conclusion. Studying these scriptures, I’ve realized I do ponder. There are decisions I’ve made that I have prayed and thought much about before acting. Some decisions, on the other hand, I’ve made without spending nearly as much time. Almost always, the more time I spend the better the decision. As my faith has grown, I’ve come to really value this time.
Prayer: Father God, Thank you for this time of Advent. It is a time to ponder, a time to be reminded of your many blessings. Help us to be still, to take the treasure of the love of Jesus into our hearts.
