Matthew 1:22-23—Joseph
“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel’ (which means, God with us).” Matthew 1: 22-23, ESVNames are incredibly important in the Bible. They provide us with wonderful symbolism of promises made and covenants kept, but “Immanuel” feels a little different. It isn’t just another name; it’s a reminder of who God is.
“Immanuel”, which our translators equate with “God with us”, is an indicator of our relationship with God through Jesus. God isn’t kept hidden away in the clouds, distanced from our everyday lives. He is with us, and the naming of Christ reminds us of this relationship. This is the God that walked with Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, the one who appeared to Moses. This is the God who sticks with us through everything, thick and thin, and he reminds us of this by sending a savior, Immanuel.
I find this reminder incredibly comforting. The holidays can be difficult for so many reasons, especially this year when we may be kept distant from our loved ones. Christmas is a time for community, and that looks a bit different in 2020. Still, we are reminded that God is with us. That promise is echoed through the birth of Immanuel, and I believe that is something worth celebrating.
Prayer: Gracious God, Remind us of your presence in our lives as we celebrate the birth of Christ. Teach us to seek comfort in your promises and trust that you are with us. Let us rejoice in the gift of Immanuel. Amen.
