Luke 1:18-23—Zechariah & Elizabeth/The Prophets
“Zechariah said to the angel, ‘How will I know that this is so? For I am an old man, and my wife is getting on in years’.” Luke 1:18, NRSV
Have you ever been “dumb-founded” by news? Consider Zechariah. When the angel Gabriel told him of the impending birth of his son John, Zechariah expressed doubts (verse 18, paraphrased): “Are you kidding? My wife and I are both old!” Gabriel responded … “I have been sent to speak to you and to bring you this good news…But now, because you did not believe my words, …, you will become mute, unable to speak, until the day these things occur.” Wow! Zechariah got 9 months of laryngitis for doubting Gabriel!
In his home, speechless for 9 months, Zechariah likely struggled to give Elizabeth or others details of what Gabriel told him! Did he rely on sign language to communicate as we have during this pandemic? Possibly. As the angel promised, Elizabeth conceived and John was born.
Have you ever found yourself speechless? Do you hesitate to pray or share your faith because “the right words” escape you? God knows your intent even if words aren’t spoken. In prayer, talk to God as you would with a friend. When faith-sharing, interact normally, asking God to inspire your words.
Prayer: Lord in the manger, give us strength to continue “until the day these things occur”—in God’s time. Help us to use creative energy we acquired during this 2020 pandemic both to convey our thoughts in prayer and our faith to those we meet this Holy Season. Give us a “new voice” to use for your glory. Amen
