Scripture – Exodus 16:2-3

2 The whole congregation of the Israelites complained against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the pots of meat and ate our fill of bread, for you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”

Prayer Focus: If there is one thing we know about human beings is that we have short memories, especially about the blessings that we have experienced. It has not been long since God’s people walked across the sea on dry land, saw their Egyptian captors swallowed up by the returning water, and sang a song of deliverance. But already the whole congregation is complaining against Moses and Aaron. With rose colored glasses they say, “If only we had stayed in Egypt. At least we had enough to eat back then.” Is there anything that you remember today with great fondness, but perhaps was not as rosy in the moment itself? Why do we insist on going back instead of going forward? Where do you see God leading our church today – forward or backwards?
