Scripture – Isaiah 61:1a

1 The spirit of the Lord God is upon me

    because the Lord has anointed me;

Prayer Focus: As we continue our Advent journey around the theme “Love Comes Down,” we turn this week to the prophet Isaiah. Isaiah 61 comes from the third major section of Isaiah, which scholars believe were Words from the Lord shared with God’s people after they returned from exile in Babylon. So, often in this section we find words of encouragement and promise to those who had known struggle and challenge, especially as their return to the land of Israel might not have lived up to their expectations. And so, in our verses this week, we find words that Jesus himself will one day claim for himself about the task and role of God’s anointed messiah. In light of our theme, this is the purpose why love comes down. Pray that you might know the Spirit of the Lord upon you today and respond with the love God places upon your heart and in your life.
