Saturday, April 5th: Scripture – Psalm 132:6-7

6 We heard of it in Ephrathah;

    we found it in the fields of Jaar.

7 “Let us go to his dwelling place;

    let us worship at his footstool.”

Prayer Focus: The psalm continues to remind us of the story of David, in these verses with finding the ark of the covenant. The ark, which contained the tablets of the Ten Commandments and other remnants from the Exodus journey of God’s people from Egypt. The ark had been kept at Shiloh from the time of the conquest of Palestine, captured by the Philistines in a battle, and finally returned to Israel when it started causing trouble for the Philistines (1 Samuel 4-7). David learns of the ark’s location and decides to go and retrieve it. What do you need to go and retrieve today? Pray that you will fulfill your commitment today.

“The ark provided an account of the presence of God among the people. Its history showed the importance of having God with you and the danger of trying to use God or carry him around. … The ark was the symbol, not the reality. When the ark was treated as a talisman, as a curio or as a magical device with which to manipulate God, everything went wrong. God cannot be contained or used.” Peterson, 159.
