Friday, April 4th: Scripture – Psalm 132:1-5

1 O Lord, remember in David’s favor

    all the hardships he endured;

2 how he swore to the Lord

    and vowed to the Mighty One of Jacob,

3 “I will not enter my house

    or get into my bed;

4 I will not give sleep to my eyes

    or slumber to my eyelids,

5 until I find a place for the Lord,

    a dwelling place for the Mighty One of Jacob.”

Prayer Focus: Psalm 132 is the longest of the psalms of ascent and its verses will carry us into next week for these daily devotions. Have you ever had an experience of being on a trip with our family or a group and having that traveling experience bring various stories and memories to mind? You pass the time sharing those stories and the stories begin to shape your expectations for the trip ahead. Psalm 132 helps us to recall some of the stories of King David, beginning with David’s desire to build a “dwelling place” for God. Pray for the commitment of David expressed in these verses, but remember that David did not build the temple for God. God’s plans always remain far beyond our own designs.

“Psalm 132 is a psalm of David’s obedience, of ‘how we promised God, made a vow to the Strong God of Jacob.’ The psalm shows obedience as a lively, adventurous response of faith that is rooted in historical fact and reaches into a promised hope.” Peterson, 158.
