1 Often have they attacked me from my youth
—let Israel now say—
2 often have they attacked me from my youth,
yet they have not prevailed against me.
Prayer Focus: Various studies through the years have indicated that a key characteristic of successful people is something like “grit” or “perseverance.” It is the ability to stick with a vision or a task, especially when obstacles arise on the journey. The psalmist says, “they attacked me from my youth, but they have not prevailed against me.” In a metaphor from my youth we might say, “I took a lickin’ but kept on tickin’” The Lenten journey is long and it is easy to find excuses to give up. The commitment you make on Sunday with your pledge of time, talent, and treasure will not always be simple or easy to fulfill. But you can do it! Pray for the grit and perseverance that God will provide.
“Stick-to-itiveness. Perseverance. Patience. The way of faith is not a fad that is taken up in one century only to be discarded in the next. It lasts. It is a way that works. It has been tested thoroughly.” Peterson, 120.
