24 “But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.
25 Woe to you who are well fed now,
for you will go hungry.
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
26 Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you,
for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
Prayer Focus: We do not find in Matthew’s Sermon on the Mount the corresponding declarations of woe like we find here in the Sermon on the Plain. These are direct contrasts to the blessings that we heard earlier in the week. Woe to the rich, the well-fed, to the laughing, and to those spoken well about. It is easy to put our trust and our focus on these temporal comforts. If we focus our efforts there instead of on God, we might miss the true blessings God intends for all to share. Pray for a willingness and ability focus on God and God’s gifts today.
