Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina (SHFBM) strives through education, advocacy, and partnerships to eliminate hunger by the solicitation and distribution of food. The local affiliate is called Second Harvest Partners, which is comprised of 29-30 congregations in York and Lancaster Counties.

Short-term assistance is provided by food delivered on a tractor-trailer and distributed to those in need. Long-term assistance is provided by development of a strategy that empowers people to become self-sufficient.

Unity typically partners with Jerusalem Baptist to distribute food in July and November. Unity will be hosting Second Harvest on July 13, 2016. Find out more!

On the assigned work day volunteers are needed to:

  • Greet Guests (2-3 volunteers)
  • Assist with registration of recipients, (6 volunteers)
  • Unloading food from the truck, (20 volunteers)
  • Packing the food in grocery bags, (20 volunteers)
  • Helping guests load the food into their vehicles, (10 volunteers with hand trucks)
  • Traffic/parking management, (2-3 volunteers)
  • Trash removal, (2-3 volunteers with pickup trucks)

Time commitment is 3 hours, 8:00 am to 11:00am. Volunteers of all ages are welcome, as the only requirements are a smile and a willingness to communicate God’s love by being a good neighbor. In 2011 SHP served more than 5000 families.

Second Harvest Partners was organized by Providence Presbytery in 2007, with St. Mary’s Catholic Church as the host sponsor.  Today, SHP is coordinated by six congregations: Hermon Presbyterian, Mt. Zion Baptist, Woodlawn Presbyterian, First Calvary Baptist, Union Baptist and St. Mary’s Catholic Church.  Coordinators from these churches work with congregations like Unity Presbyterian to sponsor mobile pantry food distributions twice per month from March – December.
